T h e F i r s t A n n o u n c e m e n t CENTRAL EUROPEAN CHEMICAL MEETING (CECM-1) June 15-17, 2000, Varazdin, Croatia will be held under the joint auspices of Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia, and Rugjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia. Semialjac LOCATION: The meeting will be held in Varazdin, the cultural and administrative center of northwestern Croatia. Varazdin is an old charming baroque city located close to the Hungarian, Slovenian, and Austrian borders. In 18th century Varazdin was the capital of Croatia. Today, in Varazdin are active many cultural institutions, theater, chamber orchestra, galleries, museums, and institutions which belong to the University of Zagreb. SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY: The conference will be held just before the Math/Chem/Comp (MCC'2000) Course & Conference in Dubrovnik. It will be possible to arrange the direct transfer from Varazdin to Dubrovnik meeting. SCOPE: The Varazdin meeting will give a review of chemical research in Central Europe, status, history, and possible future trends in chemistry of this region as well as contribution of central-European scientists to chemistry. The aspects of the meeting will include input in chemical research (financing, manpower), output (publication, productivity, impact), distribution of research subjects, an overview of hot topics, education, etc. The meeting is also a sort of homage to the Central European Meetings on Theoretical Chemistry and Spectroscopy, which have been held some twenty years ago. PROGRAM: The following speakers have been invited to lecture at CECM-1 I. Hargittai (Budapest), R. Janoschek (Graz), P. Carsky (Prag), V. Sunjic (Zagreb), T. Braun (Budapest), and J. Zupan (Ljubljana). SITE, ACCOMMODATION & TRANSPORTATION: The meeting will take place at the Hotel Turist, Varazdin. Details regarding accommodation and transportation will appear in the 2nd circular. Most participants will be accommodated in Hotel Turist and some in Hotel Garestin and eventually in Hotel Maltar. All hotels are within a walking distance from the conference hall. The hotel prices given below are tentative, and they are supposed not to change too much in the year of 2000: HOTEL TURIST: bed/break. half-board Double/per person 25, USD 28, USD The city of Varazdin is 70 km north from Zagreb and it could be reached by air via Zagreb, by car using the highway from Budapest (300 km), from Graz (130 km), from Ljubljana (180 km), by (frequent) buses from Zagreb, and by train from Zagreb and from Budapest. REGISTRATION FORM & ABSTRACT: The enclosed registration form and abstract (which should not exceed one typewritten page) should be received by the organizer (Prof. H. Vancik) by March 15, 2000. Abstract should be written in English and in native language on separate sheets. It should be sent either in the form of (any version of) MS Word Document as an E-mail attachment or as a hard copy. The margins of 2.5 cm and Times New Roman font (1.5 line spacing; size 12) are recommended. REGISTRATION FEE: The registration fee is USD 80,00 and (for students USD 40,00) and should be paid till March 15, 2000. The account for those paying in Croatian currency will be given upon request.
